About 8 years ago (when Casey and I bought our first house, to be exact), we did a lot of painting, with minimal renovations. It was then I had the epiphany, “how cute would it be to have professional pictures taken of us painting in our house!”
Thus, the idea was born well before I even had a camera in my hand.
There’s a lot that’s happened in our relationship since then, and I’ll tell you one thing that remains consistent: we always have and always will be a couple of cats under construction.
If I could bust one myth for you today, let it be this: the hard work you put into marriage isn’t always fun– that’s just not true!
Lemme explain: yes, marriage takes work. And when we think of work we often think it’s painless and difficult to get through. But I actually chose a career I love: photographing weddings. So when I think of work, I often look forward to the dreamy times when everyone is out of my house and I get to work from my little office (aka my closet).
That’s what marriage is like for me (most days, at least– hehe): fun, exciting and intentional.
It’s getting quiet, doing the deep personal and foundational work, and working with the people I love everyday to build a legacy and life I love and choose.
-
Is marriage as hard as people say it is? Nope
-
Can it sometimes be like painting the same wall twice? [sigh…] yes.
-
Has marriage transformed my soul and my life? You bet
My new vows in my marriage look a little more like this:
“I promise to always be under construction with you. To do my very best to tear down walls to create more open space. To decorate the walls after I paint them twice. To clean the pipes when they’re filled with junk. And most important: to transform each room in our house as long as we both shall live.”
