The most frequently asked question I get during an engagement session is, “where do I put my hands?”
If you’ve ever gotten your photo taken… like… even once, you know what I’m taking about!
Rest assured, with a mix of direction and prompting by the right person behind the lens (hi!) , it’s time to put aside any fears you might have around your engagement session and talk about where to put your hands!
Fear not, my friend. I’m here to help.
Taking cute, candid photos with your love doesn’t have to be hard. In fact, I’m a firm believer that it shouldn’t be. I think it should be easy and fun and you should do it all the time– with or without a professional camera in your face.
But for the sake of this article, we’re talking about where to put your hands during your engagement shoot, in front of a professional (camera and human), without having to feel so dang awkward.

Are you ready to nail your engagement session with as much confidence as a baby learning to walk? Good. Fasten your seatbelt. I’m taking you on a ride, boo.
Hold hands
This is a great start for any engagement session, since engagement sessions are all about capturing connection. This is a playful and fun way to start out your engagement session and takes the pressure off too much PDA right in the beginning!
Play a game!
It can be anything that gets you both moving and enjoying each other, like building a snowman, having a snowball fight or playing fake chicken fights (where partner A gets on partner B’s shoulders!— if medically possible, of course). Encouraging activities and movement during quality time increases your sense of closeness to one another!
Dance
Once you’re ready to slow down and become a little more intimate, turning on some music and dancing can be such a great way to break the ice to capture some more intimate moments. If your in a high altitude location, like in the Colorado Rockies, it’s a good idea to download your playlist to your phone so you can still play music. Trust me, I’m speaking from experience!
Grab the chin or jawline
Now that you’re a little more comfortable in front of the camera, it’s time to involve a few kisses (nothing too crazy, of course), but this is a great time to start grabbing a chin or jawline. Bringing hands into the image creates a deeper sense of intimacy.
Maybe even grab a patootie
I went there, really I did. I like big butts and I cannot lie. And little butts. And all the fun things that take the pressure off of being awkward and help you get down to your fun, playful and silly selves. So grab a butt… we don’t have to tell anyone. 🙂
